One of the hardest lessons I’ve learned in business (and life) is this:
We’re not meant to live in constant hustle.
We’re meant to move through seasons.
Not the four that the weather gives us… but three that I believe every entrepreneur cycles through again and again. I call them the Animal Seasons.
And once you recognize which season you’re in, everything feels lighter. You stop fighting yourself. You stop comparing your pace to someone else’s. And you start honoring the natural rhythm of your business.
So, let’s meet the animals:
🐴 Donkey Season
This is the head-down, sleeves-rolled-up grind.
The season where you’re carrying big loads and laying down foundations brick by brick.
Think:
- Building backend systems
- Batching months of content
- Reworking that dusty old funnel
- Drafting the outlines of your next offer
It’s not glamorous. No one’s applauding. But Donkey Season is the backbone of progress. It’s the work that future-you will thank you for.
🦚 Peacock Season
This is your “show up and blow up” mode.
Peacock Season is when you strut your feathers, step into the spotlight, and let yourself be seen.
Think:
- Hosting workshops
- Guesting on podcasts
- Launching new offers
- Sharing client results and wins
This is where the money usually flows. It’s when all those donkey hours finally pay off and the seeds you planted start to blossom into opportunities, sales, and new clients.
The energy of Peacock Season is electric. You feel visible, magnetic, and confident. And guess what? That’s exactly when your audience feels it too.
🦥 Sloth Season
Ahhh, the hardest one to honor.
Sloth Season is about slowing down on purpose. Not out of laziness, but out of wisdom.
It’s long walks without AirPods.
It’s naps in the middle of the day.
It’s cooking a meal from scratch or reorganizing a closet just because it soothes your brain.
This is the reset. The pause. The recalibration.
Sloth Season is what makes Donkey and Peacock possible. Without it, burnout is lurking around the corner. (Trust me… I’ve been around that corner. Zero stars. Do not recommend. 😅)
Why All 3 Seasons Matter
The magic isn’t in picking your favorite animal and living there forever.
The magic is in honoring the season you’re in.
If you’re hustling like a donkey: keep going, you’re building something beautiful.
If you’re peacocking: soak up the spotlight, you’ve earned it.
If you’re slothing: good, stretch out, linger over your coffee, let your nervous system remember what “enough” feels like.
Because when you allow yourself to flow through these cycles instead of resisting them, you stop burning out and start building momentum that actually lasts.
P.S. This Animal Seasons framework is one of those things I share with every entrepreneur I meet because it helps you see your work in a new light. When you honor your season instead of fighting it, you start building a brand and business with more ease, flow, and alignment.
