The branding world is full of advice.
Some of it’s gold.
A lot of it… is straight-up garbage that keeps entrepreneurs spinning their wheels.
If you’ve ever felt confused about what actually matters when it comes to building a brand, you’re not alone. The internet is noisy, and bad branding advice spreads like wildfire.
So today, I’m calling it out.
Here are 10 pieces of branding B.S. that need to be buried once and for all, along with the truth you should be focusing on instead.
1. “You need to figure out your why first.”
Nope. You need to figure out your who first.
Your “why” might be deep, heartfelt, and life-changing for you ,but your audience cares about themselves, not your origin story.
If your why doesn’t connect to something they want, need, or value, it’s just a nice sentiment that won’t move them to buy.
The truth:
Start with who you’re serving, what they want, and how you can deliver it. Then figure out how your “why” connects to that.
2. “Just be authentic!”
Cute advice, but vague as hell.
People use “authenticity” as an excuse to post random coffee shots and behind-the-scenes selfies with no actual strategy.
The truth:
Authenticity means showing up consistently with a clear, strategic message that matters to your audience. You can (and should) show personality, but if there’s no purpose behind it, you’re just adding to the noise.
3. “A beautiful logo is the key to a successful brand.”
LOL. No.
A logo is the cherry on top. But if the cake underneath, your messaging, positioning, and offers, is dry and flavorless, nobody’s coming back for seconds.
The truth:
Strong branding starts with substance. Visuals amplify it. They don’t create it.
4. “Post consistently, and the right people will find you.”
Wrong. Posting consistently without positioning is like yelling into the void and hoping your dream clients just happen to be walking by.
The truth:
Consistent posting works only when paired with a clear, differentiated message that’s aimed at the right people in the right places.
5. “Your brand colors alone will determine your success.”
I get it, color psychology is real. But no single shade of blue is going to make or break your business.
The truth:
Colors work when they’re part of a larger strategy: guiding attention, building trust, and influencing decisions. And yes, we literally teach you how to do that in Branded in a Day™.
6. “Niche down until it hurts.”
I know this advice was meant to encourage focus, but some people take it so far they end up with an audience of five people and a cat.
The truth:
Niche down until it makes sense. Specific enough to be memorable, broad enough to scale.
7. “If your brand is good, it will sell itself.”
I wish. Even the best brands need marketing.
The truth:
Strong brands market themselves relentlessly through visibility, partnerships, content, and offers. If no one knows you exist, your “amazing” brand is just a secret.
8. “You need a huge following to be successful.”
Wrong. 1,000 raving fans who buy from you will always beat 100K people who couldn’t care less.
The truth:
Focus on the right following: people who want what you offer and trust you enough to buy it.
9. “You have to go viral to grow your brand.”
Going viral is like a one-night stand, fun in the moment, rarely leads to long-term success.
The truth:
Sustainable brands grow through consistent positioning and visibility, not random algorithm luck.
10. “Your personal brand should be a perfect, polished version of you.”
Perfection is boring. And fake.
The truth:
People connect with brands that feel real. Professional, yes, but also human. Your quirks and personality are what make you memorable. Don’t polish them out.
Here’s the Bottom Line
Branding isn’t about chasing trends, obsessing over the perfect logo, or waiting for a viral post to change your life.
It’s about:
→ Knowing exactly who you serve and why they care.
→ Showing up consistently with a message that matters.
→ Building a brand that works like a business asset, not a vanity project.
And that’s exactly what we help you do at Digital Brand Kit.
Because branding isn’t magic, it’s method. And when you have the right system, you can skip the fluff and start building a brand that actually grows your business.
